I strongly believe that medical cannabis has given me a new lease on life.
I am a mother of 3 from Lake Elmo and also have 4 nieces. I have been on a long, painful road to recovery. Because of degenerative spinal disc disease, I have been on a variety of opioid and other pain medications for 14 years. As a result, I suffered from severe side effects, including liver damage and severe digestive problems.
Following a debilitating broken back injury in 2014, I developed allergies to several conventional pain medications, causing large hives that made my eyes swell shut. With nothing left to manage my severe pain, I was stuck lying on my couch in misery.
At a friend’s suggestion, I decided to try cannabis-based medicines. Since starting on MinnMed medicines in May 2016, my pain level has reduced from a debilitating “10” on the 1-to-10 pain scale to a manageable “2 or 3.” My list of medicines has gone from 18 to 6, and best of all, I have reduced the number of addictive, dangerous opioids to zero.
Beyond pain relief, I have felt several various improvements related to swelling, muscle spasms, mental health, weight control and my digestive health. I have also reduced the number of hefty health insurance co-payments that I had been paying for a long list of medicines that caused more harm than good.
Medical cannabis is a cheaper, less addictive and healthier way to get pain relief, period.
I don’t get a “high” feeling when taking my cannabis-based capsules. It is enough to relax me and alleviate my pain. That’s it. In the relatively rare occasion that I use a vaporizer instead of capsules, there is “a small high” that doesn’t last very long.
In the beginning I was worried that the whole process of getting certified to try medical cannabis would be a big mess. However, I was pleasantly surprised and relieved to find that the State certification process only took a couple of days and that the law now allowed me to get medical relief legally with a reputable product that is tested by third parties for safety.
I believe that having to use cannabis illegally would be less safe, less effective and more anxiety-inducing. When I got my state license, I realized I finally had a legal way to get pain relief and my anxiety was out the door.
After becoming certified, I worked with my physician and the MinnMed staff to develop a customized plan that fit my unique and complex situation. My treatment started with MinnMed Yellow capsules, but found that formulation didn’t provide adequate pain relief. I now take one MinnMed Red capsule in the morning, and one in the evening, and have experienced great results. On the rare occasion that I need fast relief from severe muscle spasms, I use a MinnMed Red vaporizer.
My side effects from cannabis are so minimal, and I am so much happier. One day my husband literally told me, “you are so much better now, this is how you used to be when you were in college.”
Look out world, I’m back.
